TALLAHASSEE – Larry Simmons has been elected
as the new Chair of the Leon County Democratic
Executive Committee. Simmons replaces Rick
Minor, who left to pursue other interests and
left the seat vacant in August. Simmons, a native of Pensacola who moved to
Leon County in 2006, was selected for the
position in a special election. "My goal is to reach out to the community,
hear voters’ concerns, and then help elect the
best Democratic candidates to make Leon County
and the state of Florida a wonderful place to
work, live and raise a family," Simmons said.
Simmons is highly energetic and poised to hit
the ground running. "I strongly believe that
the challenges we face as a community requires
leadership that inspires optimism and
persistent action, Larry is uniquely qualified
and up to the challenge," stated Florida
Representative Michelle Vasilinda. "I am
honored and humbled that Leon County Democrats
have given me the opportunity to serve as our
party leader during these challenging times,"
stated Simmons. Simmons brings several years of experience
in political and community work to his new
position. He served as volunteer co-chair for
the "Tallahassee for Obama" campaign. He
founded a youth sports organization in the
inner city of Pensacola, for which he was named
"Angel in Our Midst" by WEAR TV 3. He was
recently appointed by County Commissioner Bob
Rackleff to serve on a commission to review the
county’s charter. While a student at the University of West
Florida's College of Professional Studies,
where he earned a degree in social work in
2003, Simmons was named as an Outstanding
Student Leader. He was selected as a member of
the Social Work Honor Society and elected
President of the Student Social Work
Organization. In 2002, Simmons was named
"Social Work Student of Year by the Northwest
Florida Chapter of the National Association of
Social Workers. While attending Pensacola Junior College,
Simmons achievements include being selected for
the Minority Leadership Award; serving as a
member and vice president of service for Phi
Theta Kappa (International Honor Society) and
being a Student Ambassador; and being
recognized by the Florida House of
Representatives with a House Bill that honored
students from across the state who were
selected to the USA Today All Academic Teams.
In further service to his community, Simmons
served 5-1/2 years as a member of the Florida
Army National Guard. He received medals of
achievement for his participation in hurricane
evacuations and was recognized for outstanding
performance during annual training. Simmons
achieved the rank of Sergeant E-5 before
receiving an honorable discharge. ###
