Community Service: Walking the walk
Two days after a
February 23 DEC social where he chatted passionately about the need for
Democrats to be more visible in their commitment to community service, mailto:vanwilliams1@yahoo.com was putting his skills where his mouth is. A journeyman carpenter, he was helping install siding on the Leon County house that is to be featured on ABC television’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, April 26. The
popular show finds families deserving of a new home and shows how
people and businesses in their communities are willing to step up and
lend a helping hand, at the direction of the experts who run the
construction project at the fast pace needed to produce a television
series. David was one of scores of skilled craftsmen volunteering that day to help ready a new Queen Anna Drive home for the family of George and Barbara Kadiz. The
parents had 10 children -- including six adopted from China, five of
whom have special needs. The father was in the hospital being treated
for a brain tumor during the makeover and died March 2 before ever
seeing their new home. The entire Tallahassee area community has opened its heart to the family in a way David says President Obama has urged us all to do. “When
you choose to serve -- whether it's your nation, your community or
simply your neighborhood -- you are connected to that fundamental
American ideal that we want life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness
not just for ourselves, but for all Americans,” the President has said.
“That's why it's called the American dream.” In
the coming months, the Leon County DEC will be encouraging Democrats to
get involved. You don’t have to have the tradesman-like skills of a
David Van Williams. The only requirement is that you care. Check this website for updates on upcoming opportunities. You can also contact our Community Service Committee Chair Ruth Bedell for more information on what’s planned.
